IN-CLASS PRESENTATIONS

FISH offers free in-class presentations to King County-area schools.  (A nominal $50 fee will be charged for schools beyond King County). The presentation should be done prior to the hatchery visit.

Priority for the in-class presentations will be given to those classes scheduled for a tour of the hatchery in order to prepare them for their visit.  If your school is unable to schedule a field trip, FISH would be happy to visit your classroom anytime after our busy season, which runs from September through mid-November.

Our program is designed for elementary-age students and can be conducted for up to 100 students at a time.  However, FISH can also modify the program for middle school and high school students.  There are no set times for the presentations.  FISH will work around the school’s schedule.

The presentation consists of a slide show discussing the different species of Pacific salmon, their lifecycle, habitat requirements, predators, challenges, and hatchery operations.

GRADES K-1

GRADES 2-6

1.  STUMP THE STUDENTS - [15 minutes]:  A class competition!  The presenter will ask a series of questions to each class.  [If there is only one class, we will divide into two teams.]  If they get a correct answer, they get one point.  The class with the most points wins!

2.  NORTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND [10 minutes]:  The presenter uses students to conduct two short "skits" of two very popular NW Native American legends about salmon.  [This works well with large groups.]

3.  WATERSHED ACTIVITY (Grades 3 and up) [20 - 30 minutes]:  This activity works best with smaller groups (no more than 2 classes at a time).  Students will pair up and each "pair" will get two pieces of blank white copy paper and a red and blue (water soluble) marker.  One piece of paper is crumpled up and taped to the other sheet to make a 3-dimensional "landscape".  Students then highlight the ridges with a red pen and the valleys with the blue pen.  The presenter then brings the "rainstorm" to their project.  The colors will mix together and students can observe how runoff affects our local streams and salmon habitat.  (Includes discussion time).   The following items need to be supplied by the teachers/students:

Options for multiple classes:

1.  The slide show presentation can be conducted for entire group, and then presenter can go back to each class to do a project with individual classrooms in 20-30 minutes sessions.  [We request no more than 10-minute intervals between each session.]

2.  Classes can be doubled up for presentation and project.  For instance, if there are four classes, we can do two separate presentations and have hosting classroom students team up with visiting class for project.

TO SCHEDULE A PRESENTATION:  Please check the calendar for availability at www.localendar.com/public/FISHpres

Please be sure to include the following information.  This is very important to help facilitate the scheduling process:

FISH will do its best to accommodate your schedule.  Last year, FISH visited 202 classrooms, almost 5,000 students, in two months.  It is a busy time for us!  We appreciate your patience.
