Corporate Matching
Make your donation do double – or even triple - duty. Many employers will match charitable contributions made by their employees. Become a FISH Volunteer
The Issaquah Salmon Hatchery is the most-visited hatchery in the state and relies on a committed team of docents (educational volunteers) to provide tours to visitors who come to see magnificent salmon spawn in Issaquah Creek. FISH docents foster a sense of wonder about salmon for thousands of visitors who come to the hatchery every year.
FISH recruits and trains adult volunteers in the late summer. Volunteers are needed primarily during the fall spawning season, from September to mid-November, although some volunteer opportunities exist throughout the year.
Training includes:
- Hatchery tour
- Presentation about the salmon life cycle
- Tips on how to interact with students, chaperones and other visitors
- Comprehensive training manual
Volunteer requirements/responsibilities:
- Attend training session
- Provide pertinent and interesting information to hatchery visitors of varied ages and interests
- Encourage educational exchanges while onsite and be able to lead school children, if necessary
- Help with science fairs at schools
- Help with events at the hatchery during Salmon Days, the 1st weekend of October
- Help with FISH birthday events
- Help at other events where FISH will be represented
- Apply personal skills and interests as appropriate
- Stay current on watershed, salmon and hatchery issues
- Be open to learning, teaching and friendship
- Agree to and pass a Washington State Patrol criminal background check
- Commit to an average of 8 hours per month, typically in 2- or 4-hour shifts, from September through mid-November either on weekdays and/or weekends
- Agree to FISH and hatchery policies and procedures
- Teen volunteers are required to have a responsible adult onsite at the hatchery at all times.
