Saturday, November 17th the Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery announced the names of the winners of its 75th Anniversary Photo Contest. Stuart Estes, whose winning photo appears at left, the winner of the adult division was thrilled. “I’ve been taking photos seriously for about a year and this is the first contest I’ve entered. To win was great”, said Estes. Also on hand was Spencer Beck who won the junior division. Beck is a high school senior.
The contest was conducted during the months of September and October, 2012. Contestants could submit up to three entries. Photos had to have been taken on the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery grounds in publically accessible areas during the contest months. In all there were 85 entries.
FISH held the contest to mark the 75th anniversary of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery which was opened in 1937. Construction was a Works Progress Administration project which gave work to over 30 during the difficult 30’s era depression. Today the hatchery, operated by the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife, captures, spawns and nurtures Chinook and Coho for release into Issaquah Creek in the spring.
